Havezate Mensinge in Roden is the most authentically furnished manor house in the Netherlands. The inventory largely originates from the residents and therefore features a variety of original and unique objects. These objects provide insight into the life and wealth of the manor house's former inhabitants. Together with the more than six-hundred-year-old building and the largely intact estate, the museum is a particularly interesting place to visit.

Museum Havezate Mensinge is beautifully situated: it borders an extensive forest area and is located a very short distance from Groningen, Assen, and Drachten. At Mensinge, the history of many centuries comes to life: here you discover how people used to live in a Drenthe manor house.

Upon your visit, you are first introduced to the history of the Drenthe manor houses in the permanent exhibition in the coach house. The unique phenomenon of manor house rights comes to life through images and texts. Subsequently, the manor house can be viewed in detail.

Paintings

Family portraits of the former residents hang throughout the house. In addition, dozens of paintings and watercolors by Coenraad Kymmell, son of one of the former residents, can be found. Around 1900, Coenraad captured the Mensinge estate and surroundings in a colorful palette. Just like his Impressionist contemporaries, the landscape and the interplay of light take center stage in loose brushstrokes. His works provide an interesting glimpse of the landscape around Roden from a hundred years ago.

Walking on the Mensinge Estate

After a visit to Mensinge, you can take beautiful walks through the stately avenues surrounding the house that lead to the Mensinge Forest. The Mensinge Forest was created by the residents partly as a park forest for walking and partly for timber production. A multitude of structures can be seen in the forest, including raised beds, wooded banks, a burial mound, and six overgrown pingo ruins. In collaboration with Staatsbosbeheer, two beautiful walking routes have been marked out, one of which passes by the cultural heritage of Roden.

Eating and sleeping

Opposite the manor house, you will find Cuisinerie Mensinge: a restaurant for a pleasant lunch on the terrace, an intimate dinner, or a unique overnight stay.

Accessibility

The driveway to the car park is located on Mensingheweg, on the north side of the building. Parking is free. From the car park, it is a 150-meter walk to the museum. Disabled visitors may park along Mensingheweg for 3 hours with a GHP card visible in the windshield. Consult Google Maps for the exact route from your starting point and for current departure and travel times.
