The Airborne Museum tells the story of the Battle of Arnhem. The Airborne Museum's permanent exhibition, "Hartenstein," tells the day-to-day events of the Battle of Arnhem. From the airborne landings on the heath to the evacuation across the Rhine... Through photos, texts, objects, and audiovisual material, you can discover what the soldiers and civilians experienced in September 1944. After an introductory film, following the route will tell you the complete story. The permanent collection includes several masterpieces, such as Lieutenant Colonel John Frost's hunting horn and Major General Roy Urquhart's binoculars. Historical footage and authentic objects are interspersed with interviews from veterans and civilians who experienced one of the most famous battles of World War II. Airborne Experience In the Airborne Experience, history comes to life through realistic reconstructions and life-size film clips as you walk through the successive chapters of the Battle of Arnhem. Images and sound completely envelop the experience. After the glider flight, you arrive at the landing grounds and suddenly find yourself amidst the fierce fighting in the streets of Arnhem in the 1940s, fighting to capture the Rhine Bridge. The sounds of a devastating war—shots, impacts, English shouts, German orders, and the fear of those in hiding—are intense. The resistance of the German army in Arnhem proves too strong, and the British are forced to surrender after four days. You follow the route and arrive in Oosterbeek, where the remaining British troops are trapped in Oosterbeek and unable to escape. The situation around Hotel Hartenstein, the British headquarters, is becoming increasingly dire. Polish troops landed near Driel for reinforcements, but after nine days the Allied airborne troops were forced to withdraw across the Rhine. The Airborne Experience is an intense experience.
