Mozart Requiem & Coronation Mass
Mozart's Requiem became known to the general public through the film 'Amadeus' and is perhaps the most impressive work by this composer who died young. Mozart wrote it shortly before his own death, commissioned by an anonymous client. The Requiem evokes feelings of mourning, fear and sorrow. But at the same time also hope, light and beauty.
The festive Coronation Mass shows a completely different Mozart. At the coronation of the King of Bohemia, the archbishop decreed that the mass could not last longer than 25 minutes. Despite, or perhaps because of this restriction, the mass radiates vitality and energy.
The concert opens with the impressive a capella Miserere Mei by Allegri. At one time, this work was not allowed to be sung anywhere else but in the Vatican. Until the 14-year-old Mozart heard it in the Sistine Chapel in Rome and wrote it down in full. Now live during the performances, with the spectacular High C in particular.
