At MergelRijk you can explore one of the most beautiful underground tunnel systems in Valkenburg at your own pace and experience everything about caves and marl. The rich history of the marl caves comes to life along the way through beautiful marl images, sand sculptures, 3D cave paintings®, magic of the Sand Wizard®, the Mosaquarium® and much more.

You will learn how the marl was formed some 65 million years ago and you will experience how the block breakers extracted the marl from the mountain and thus created the underground tunnels. You will see what the marl and caves were used for in the past and what the special rock is still used for today.

During your visit you can make a souvenir from a real block of marl in the Cave Workshop®. You can leave your name in the Thomas Didden quarry® and you can take the best photos at the 3D cave paintings.

MergelRijk has not been voted the best cave in Limburg for nothing and is suitable for all ages.

New: go back 70 million years in time in the Mosaquarium

At MergelRijk you can see spectacular 3D cave paintings on the walls, ceilings and floors. These cave paintings are unique in the world. The 3D paintings can only be seen well through a camera or telephone and you can experience them at their best by taking a picture with them.

As if you are walking on the seabed, as it was here 70 million years ago. In this new underwater world you will come face to face with the Mosasaurus.

MergelRijk is easily accessible by car and public transport. You can park opposite MergelRijk in the parking lot of the Steenkolenmijn for a daily rate. Plan your trip via Google Maps.
